A personality disorder is a mental health condition characterized by persistent patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that deviate significantly from the expectations of the culture, cause distress or impair functioning, and typically manifest in various areas of life such as social relationships, work, and self-image.
There are several types of personality disorders, which are often grouped into three clusters based on their characteristics:
Paranoid Personality Disorder: Characterized by a pervasive distrust and suspicion of others.
Schizoid Personality Disorder: Marked by detachment from social relationships and a limited range of emotional expression.
Schizotypal Personality Disorder: Involves social and interpersonal deficits, along with odd beliefs or magical thinking.
Antisocial Personality Disorder: A disregard for the rights of others, often involving deceit, manipulation, and a lack of remorse.
Borderline Personality Disorder: Marked by unstable relationships, self-image, and emotions, along with impulsive behaviors.
Histrionic Personality Disorder: Characterized by excessive emotionality and a need for attention and approval.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder: Involves a pattern of grandiosity, a need for admiration, and a lack of empathy.
Avoidant Personality Disorder: Characterized by social inhibition, feelings of inadequacy, and hypersensitivity to criticism.
Dependent Personality Disorder: Involves an excessive need to be taken care of, leading to submissive and clingy behaviors.
Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder: Marked by a preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and control.
